This enabled us to test, compare, and defend every proposal before changing a single bus line. In this article, we will explain our process and share lessons that can be applied to other transit systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-context\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guarapuava, a city in southern Brazil, has a population of about 182,000 (as of 2022) and is a regional hub for education, health, and industry. A user survey of 2,425 respondents corroborated the pinch points. This fieldwork included on-board origin-destination (O\u2013D) surveys, boarding\/alighting counts, and user interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fieldwork yielded <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/big-data-ptv-suite-for-large-scale-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 calibrated OD matrices<\/a>: nine for the urban network (three time periods \u00d7 three user types: full fare, students, and free pass) and six for district services. We modeled the urban and district services together because the proposed system targets unified ticketing and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a redesign centered on integration, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/streamlining-transport-planning-enhancing-integration-with-ptv-visum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timetable-based assignment<\/a> was nonnegotiable. We used Visum&#8217;s timetable-based assignment, the most detailed of its three public transportation allocation procedures, to coordinate actual runs and compute real transfer waits. This enabled journey-level route choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We calibrated impedance parameters adapted from Greater Curitiba and deliberately increased the transfer penalty to reflect observed behavior; riders rarely transferred in the base system. We validated the model by comparing the predicted loads to the field counts at 28 urban and eight district observation sections, using GEH as the primary acceptance criterion. Nearly all of the matrices met international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-insights\"><strong>Insights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The model made demand patterns legible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>morning<\/strong> peak, flows radiate from neighborhoods such as Boqueir\u00e3o toward the center. In the <strong>afternoon<\/strong>, the pattern reverses. seven nodes in total &#8211; located where demand naturally occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/public-transport-network-redesign-solving-the-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redesigned network<\/a> consists of 45 <strong>lines <\/strong>(an increase from 39);
