On a corridor in Dane County, Wisconsin &#8211; where mobility outcomes and comparability mattered &#8211; we chose a different path. We used the PTV Vissim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptvgroup.com\/en\/products\/ptv-vissim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scenario Manager<\/a> to anchor every alternative to one calibrated base and organized all changes into three buckets: geometry, signal control, and demand. We also built a demand pipeline that kept routing coherent across scenarios and made OD variants easy to swap.<br><br>In this article, we show how we set up Scenario Manager, the three\u2011bucket method, the workflow we use to swap OD variants in seconds, and the pitfalls to avoid (precedence, seams, and controllers) &#8211; so you can test more corridor options, cut rework, and keep reviews auditable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-project-scope-amp-aims\"><strong>Project scope &amp; aims<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We modeled ~1.7 miles of the US\u201151 highway in Dane County, south\u2011central Wisconsin. A scenario = base network + an ordered list of modifications applied consecutively; there\u2019s no separate network file unless you export. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/scenario-manager-in-vissim-and-viswalk-part-ii-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modifications store the resulting state<\/a> (not the click\u2011by\u2011click history), it pays to plan which objects each modification owns &#8211; and avoid editing the base once you start stacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-3-bucket-method\"><strong>Our 3\u2011bucket method<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We treat the <strong>base<\/strong> as sacred; <strong>modifications<\/strong> are change\u2011sets; <strong>scenarios<\/strong> are stacks. Our three buckets: <strong>Geometry<\/strong> (links, lanes, connectors by intersection); <strong>Signals<\/strong> (timings, offsets, coordination, rail preemption); <strong>Demand<\/strong> (OD matrices &#8211; existing, design\u2011year, sensitivities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This modularity let us mix a jughandle at the urban node with a DDI to the south, then pair either with distinct signal href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/scenario-manager-in-vissim-and-viswalk-part-ii-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which modifications were active<\/a> in each run &#8211; an auditable stack rather than a new folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/naepo-digital-twin-ptv-visum-vissim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created OD with PTV Visum ODME<\/a> and kept each volume set as its own demand modification, so swapping demand across geometry or signal plans took seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we assigned ownership: geometry lives in geometry mods, signal logic in signal mods, and nothing crosses buckets &#8211; preventing precedence conflicts when stacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> On this project, we intentionally used an older Vissim version for consistency with surrounding WisDOT work, ensuring comparability across question, all backed by the same calibrated base.
