Our recent challenge involved evaluating speed-limit changes on Rodovia dos Bandeirantes (SP-348), a major highway in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo that carries approximately 180,000 vehicles per day. As part of this work, we conducted a Highway speed limit simulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of relying on intuition or assumptions, we used PTV Vissim to simulate <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/how-microsimulation-reduces-risk-in-complex-urban-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">different speed scenarios<\/a> and evaluate their effects on travel time, traffic flow, and emissions. The model could only be calibrated after completing the exploratory analyses, ensuring higher accuracy and closer alignment with observed conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highway test took place on May 16, 2025, with three drivers operating identical gasoline\u2011powered vehicles along a 40 km stretch (from km 28 to km 68). The value here is not tied to one Brazilian corridor &#8211; it lies in the <em>approach<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vissim allowed us to explore how speed-flow-emissions relationships change under varying demands, driver behaviors, and operational conditions. It revealed dynamics that neither field measurements nor intuition alone could uncover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simulation turns opinion-driven decisions into evidence-based engineering.\u2011based engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lessons-for-mobility-planners\"><strong>Lessons for mobility planners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While this Vissim speed simulation took place in Brazil, the principles behind it apply to highways worldwide. Any corridor with fluctuating demand, complex driver behavior, or operational\u2011safety tensions can benefit from simulating speed scenarios <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/modeling-planning\/ptv-vissim-traffic-calming-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">before applying them<\/a> in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-technical-lessons-what-to-do\"><strong>Technical lessons (what to do)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Simulate before fieldwork.<\/strong> Use Vissim to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/mesoscopic-and-hybrid-simulations-in-ptv-vissim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">screen speed scenarios<\/a> line by line, then validate selectively.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expect non\u2011constant behavior at lower speeds.<\/strong> Divergence at 80 km\/h showed why perfect alignment between simulation and field is unrealistic &#8211; and unnecessary.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Include emissions early.<\/strong> Environmental impacts shifted more than travel times did.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Test across multiple demand levels.<\/strong> Benefits (or penalties) often flipped depending on volume.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Validate for credibility, not perfection.<\/strong> The ~6.4% travel\u2011time error was small enough to support decisions confidently.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overall analysis of the results:<\/strong> The observed differences in travel time were minimal. Fuel consumption improved at lower speeds. Emissions also decreased under these conditions. These findings show that reducing speeds on some highway segments can improve sustainability. Acknowledging them makes the conclusions more credible.
