Two federal roads converge there, and the tram hub links lines 2 and 4. This made it an ideal place to study <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/realistic-traffic-simulation-driving-behavior-is-key\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real traffic behavior<\/a> in all its complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Note: This article is based on the webinar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C3IWPG9P0FQ&amp;list=PLm_ftxJv3rZ2zkm0TlpfaMhdHlkkosrtq&amp;index=7&amp;t=771s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>PTV Vissim | Research Node &#8211; Data Feed Microsimulation<\/em><\/a>.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-gothaer-platz\"><strong>Why Gothaer Platz?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Erfurt, an old trading city in eastern Germany, must balance its historic streets with modern mobility needs. This is evident at Gothaer Platz, where heavy traffic, multimodal flows, and a sensitive urban setting converge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itwm.fraunhofer.de\/en\/departments\/analytics-computing-en\/data-analysis-artificial-intelligence\/bauhaus-mobilitylab.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bauhaus.MobilityLab<\/a> living lab, we established Gothaer Platz as a research node. It now serves multiple purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It validates traffic sensors for planning and modeling.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Running tests in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-weimar.de\/en\/civil-and-environmental-engineering\/chairs\/transport-system-planning\/third-party-funded-projects\/emi-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project EMI-V<\/a> on reducing non-exhaust emissions with a rolling emissions lab (a vehicle equipped with particle and brake wear sensors, as well as V2X-related electromagnetic measurements), and using PTV Vissim to test traffic control and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/triangulating-intersection-delay-with-ptv-vissim-in-hyderabad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link simulation to field data<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through the <a href=\"https:\/\/edih.digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EDIH initiative<\/a>, Gothaer Platz acts as a hands-on testbed where planners can learn about modern traffic sensor performance, typical failure models, and required quality checks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we brought multiple data sources together here. Detectors show volumes, but not behavior. Video systems show flows but not continuity. It\u2019s a real-world laboratory where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Municipal detectors<\/strong> deliver continuous volume data,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile video systems<\/strong> capture complete turning movements for all modes,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drone flights<\/strong> record <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/open-source-digital-twin-spanning-22-km-of-autonomous-driving-test-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-resolution trajectories<\/a> and driver behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these alone represents the full truth.
