Urban access points (<em>pasos y accesos urbanos<\/em>) are the road segments that link regional corridors, such as highways, with city streets. They are critical for mobility and safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Colombia, our team used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptvgroup.com\/en\/products\/ptv-vissim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PTV Vissim<\/a> to simulate low-cost \u2018soft solutions\u2019 for these points. The result: insights that would have taken months of physical pilots, delivered in a fraction of the time and cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-urban-access-points-challenge-and-opportunity\"><strong>Urban access points:<\/strong> <strong>Challenge and opportunity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban access points are more than just transition zones; they are strategic nodes where regional and urban mobility intersect. These segments carry a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/modeling-planning\/ptv-vissim-traffic-calming-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high mix of users<\/a> &#8211; private vehicles, freight, cyclists, and pedestrians &#8211; making them both essential and vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, national crash data revealed that nearly <strong>one in four road fatalities<\/strong> occurred on these access points, underscoring the urgent need for safer designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, improving safety and efficiency in these areas relies on physical pilots -temporary interventions deployed on-site to test their impact. While effective, this approach is slow, costly, and limited in scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Testing even a handful of sites can take months and require significant resources, delaying decisions and leaving many high-risk locations unaddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We saw an opportunity to change that. By using PTV Vissim, we could <strong>model dozens of scenarios virtually<\/strong>. We could explore how different interventions &#8211; such as speed &#8211; calming measures, curb extensions, or pedestrian waiting zones-affect both traffic performance and safety. From this pool, we selected a representative sample for detailed modeling. In PTV Vissim, we built two scenarios for each connector:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Baseline scenario<\/strong>: Current conditions without interventions.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternative scenario<\/strong>: Incorporating soft solutions such as speed-calming measures and parking regulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To evaluate these scenarios, we combined <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/triangulating-intersection-delay-with-ptv-vissim-in-hyderabad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operational performance indicators<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; travel times, speeds, delays-with <strong>safety metrics<\/strong> derived from the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). This dual approach allowed us to assess trade-offs between efficiency and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure data-wp-context=\"{&quot;imageId&quot;:&quot;69e18d21e57c5&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/pedestrian-crossing-planning-benchmarking-signalised-junctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pedestrian-heavy contexts<\/a>.<\/strong> When we simulated higher pedestrian activity, the benefits for safety were clear and did not significantly compromise network performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High traffic volumes change the equation.<\/strong> In scenarios with heavy motorized traffic, some interventions reduced speeds but also increased delays, making them less suitable without complementary measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Small changes can have big safety impacts.<\/strong> Even modest speed reductions In the baseline scenario, vehicles traveled at 50 km\/h, and SSAM detected multiple potential conflicts at crossing points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After introducing soft solutions-curb extensions and a reduced speed limit &#8211; the average speed dropped to 35 km\/h. It does not replace field pilots, but it makes them more targeted and effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For us, this approach represents a shift toward <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/trend-topics\/designing-resilient-cities-for-unforseen-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence-based, data-driven planning<\/a>
