Widening roads or rerouting traffic wasn\u2019t viable: the street\u2019s steep incline combined with a canyon effect from retaining walls trapped emissions, pushing concentrations above 45 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 &#8211; well beyond the 40 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hunter street, Liverpool\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6D0AB7ekryw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Traffic on Hunter Street, Liverpool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our consultancy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweco.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sweco UK<\/a>, was brought in to support the city\u2019s Clean Air Plan under the UK Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uk-air.defra.gov.uk\/library\/no2ten\/privacy-notice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joint Air Quality Unit<\/a>. From the outset, we focused on targeted, local measures that would improve air quality without resorting to a citywide Clean Air Zone &#8211; a costly option with possible <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/trend-topics\/what-is-the-impact-of-low-emissions-zones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">side effects<\/a> for residents and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Site observations and traffic data revealed the issue wasn\u2019t just <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/from-gridlock-to-flow-ptv-vissim-transforms-traffic-in-marrakesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vehicle volume<\/a> but how traffic moved through the corridor. Repeated breakdowns in progression at closely spaced signals caused stop-start conditions and hard acceleration uphill &#8211; exactly the driving pattern that elevates emissions. Reducing vehicle volumes was also unrealistic because the corridor serves as a key artery in the city\u2019s network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, our focus turned to operational optimisation. Drawing on a Transport for London study showing how retimed signals can <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/technologyplus\/efficient-public-transport-essential-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve air quality<\/a>, we developed a detailed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptvgroup.com\/en\/products\/ptv-vissim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PTV Vissim<\/a> <\/strong>microsimulation focused on the Hunter Street corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vissim model produced link-level speed and flow profiles, which were fed into the city\u2019s ADMS atmospheric dispersion model to quantify the air-quality effects.
