In a city like Hyderabad, India, where traffic is dense, diverse, and often unpredictable, these intersection delays can become serious <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/user-insights\/from-gridlock-to-flow-ptv-vissim-transforms-traffic-in-marrakesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bottlenecks<\/a>. As a civil engineer working on urban mobility challenges, I set out to answer a deceptively simple question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the most accurate and practical way to estimate delays at intersections?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this research was carried out in Hyderabad, it carries lessons to traffic engineers all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-indian-intersections-are-a-unique-challenge\"><strong>Why Indian Intersections Are a Unique Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For international readers, it\u2019s important to understand that Indian traffic conditions are fundamentally different from those in many Western cities. We used a triangulated approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-ptv-vissim-simulation\"><strong>1. PTV Vissim Simulation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We recreated each intersection in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptvgroup.com\/en\/products\/ptv-vissim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PTV Vissim<\/a> using actual road geometry, signal timings, and vehicle compositions. PTV Vissim stood out not just for its accuracy, but for its adaptability to local traffic conditions &#8211; especially in environments with high vehicle diversity and limited lane discipline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By simulating real-world scenarios, we were able to identify subtle inefficiencies, like suboptimal signal timings, that traditional methods often overlook. The ability to visualize traffic flow and test interventions virtually gave us a deeper understanding of how small changes can lead to significant improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lessons-for-international-planners\"><strong>Lessons for International Planners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While our study focused on Hyderabad, the methodology is transferable. Cities with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ptvgroup.com\/en\/management-prediction\/ptv-vistro-intersection-analysis-eases-silicon-valley-traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mixed traffic conditions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited lane discipline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inconsistent signal coordination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026can benefit from a triangulated approach that combines simulation, analytics, and field validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PTV Vissim proved especially valuable because it allowed us to test interventions virtually before recommending them in the real world. It also helped us bridge the gap between theoretical models and on-the-ground realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking Ahead, we see strong potential in integrating real-time traffic data and AI-based signal optimization into Vissim models.
